Álvarez stressed that the country is committed to continue advancing gender equality; to work in favor of the abolition of the death penalty, child labor and child marriage; to advocate for freedom of expression, social participation and non-impunity; to support the independence of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; and to strengthen the national implementation of human rights obligations.
“The Dominican Government understands that having a seat on the Human Rights Council (HRC) would provide the country with the ideal space to position itself as a regional leader on issues related to fundamental rights and, in turn, promote a participatory and open dialogue from the perspective of a country that receives and sends migrants,” added the minister.
The Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN) was created in March 2006, by UN resolution 60/251, as an intergovernmental body of the United Nations system, composed of 47 Member States responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. The resolution creating the HRC establishes that for reasons of geographic equity 13 of the Member States should belong to the African Group; 13 from Asia and the Pacific; 6 from Eastern Europe; 8 from Latin America and the Caribbean; and 7 from the Western European and Others Group.

It represents the corporate identity of the Institution, symbolized by the Maltese Cross, which highlights the set of features and objective conditions of the Institutional social essence, giving it a visual record that offers a differentiating value to other state institutions and police forces in the world.

Beginning in 1868, Bonilla is exiled to Venezuela, where he lives and works as an artist until his return to Santo Domingo in 1874. Upon his return to his city of birth, Bonilla opens a studio in his home, which survives today as a historic landmark called “La Casa del Pintor.”
In 1887, Bonilla completed the first of two oil paintings of Duarte, which the artist produced from memory. This first painting was originally sent to Venezuela, where Duarte’s family lived. Bonilla’s depictions of Duarte were the basis for later paintings and sculptures by Luis Desangles (1861-1940) and Abelardo Rodríguez Urdaneta (1870-1933).
